abstract = {Modifying commercial Li-ion batteries to become more environmentally friendly is of a growing concern. This paper provides an examination of a potential replacement for commercial cathode material using a naturally occurring purpurin in aqueous solutions of lithium and sodium salts. The purpurin is extracted from the Madder plant (Rubia tinctorum) and characterized through XRPD, FTIR, and SEM methods. The intercalation and de-intercalation capacities obtained for the purpurin as a cathode material in the aqueous solution of LiNO3 are approximately 40 mAh g-1. Compared to the capacity of ∼35 mAh g-1 obtained for commercially used transition metal oxides in an aqueous solution of Li salt, results presented make the purpurin a promising material for the "green"development of Li-ion batteries. Although the initial purpurin capacity in NaNO3 solution is almost doubled (∼73 mA h g-1) compared to that of Li-salt, it is unstable and fades during cycling. The possible explanation of the electrochemical behavior of purpurin as the cathode material in aqueous solutions of Li and Na salts is discussed in detail. © 2021 The Electrochemical Society ("ECS"). abstract = {32Si (T 1/2 = 153(19) y) is an extremely rare, naturally-occurring isotope that has been considered as a geochronometer suitable for radiometric dating over the time span from 100 to 1000 years ago - a time span that has proved rather difficult to explore in this manner. Past attempts to determine the 32Si half-life have resulted in a wide range of values possessing significant uncertainties because only low-activity samples could be made available for such measurements. Utilizing the 590 MeV ring cyclotron at PSI, megabecquerel quantities of 32Si have been produced by exposing metallic vanadium discs to high-energy protons in order to induce spallation. A radiochemical separation procedure has been successfully developed and applied to the irradiated discs as part of the SINCHRON project, based on a combination of ion-exchange and extraction resins. The process was shown to be reliable and robust with a high chemical yield. Radiochemically pure 32Si solutions with activity concentrations of up to several kBq/g can be produced to perform individual measurements (AMS, ICP-MS, LSC) for various studies. Thus, a careful redetermination of the 32Si half-life has become feasible to begin the first steps toward the confident implementation of this radionuclide for geochronological purposes. © 2021 Mario Veicht et al., published by De Gruyter, Berlin/Boston.},

abstract = {The phenolic compounds, which are rich in red wine, have gained considerable attention due to their antioxidant potential. Selected Serbian wines were analyzed for their antioxidant activity by DPPH test and the total content of phenolic compounds was determined by employing the Folin–Ciocalteu colorimetric method. The major polyphenols were determined by HPLC. The antioxidant activity was correlated with the amount of specific polyphenols (gallic acid, caffeic acid, catechin, epicatechin, myricetin, and kaempferol) by quantitative structure–activity relationship. The origin of the antioxidant potential of wines was discussed based on the individual activity of identified polyphenols and theoretical calculations (at APFD/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory). The thermodynamic parameters of free radical scavenging activity and reactivity towards DPPH·, HO·, and HOO· were explained with special emphasis on the effect of structure and intramolecular interactions in polyphenols. Based on the presented data, the positive effects of selected Serbian wines on humane health and biologically relevant free radicals are concluded. abstract = {The preparation and properties of zeolite-containing oxide coatings obtained by plasma electrolytic oxidation are investigated and discussed. Pure and Ce-exchanged natural (clinoptilolite) and synthetic (13X) zeolites are immobilized on aluminum support from silicate-based electrolyte. Obtained coatings are characterized with respect to their morphology, phase and chemical composition, photocatalytic activity and anti-corrosion properties. It is observed that all mentioned properties of obtained coatings are dependent on processing time and type of immobilized zeolite. Coatings with Ce-exchanged zeolite show higher photocatalytic activity and more effective corrosion protection than those with pure zeolite. The highest photocatalytic activity is observed for coatings processed in a pulsed DC regime for 30 min containing Ce-exchanged 13X zeolite, followed by those containing Ce-exchanged clinoptilolite. Pronounced anti-corrosion properties feature almost all samples containing Ce-exchanged 13X zeolite. © 2021},

abstract = {The objective of the study was to describe cellular and molecular markers of radioprotection by anisomycin, focusing on the changes in rat brain tissue. Two-month-old Wistar rats were exposed to a 60Co radiation source at a dose of 6 Gy, with or without radioprotection with anisomycin (150 mg/kg) administered subcutaneously 30 min before or 3 or 6 h after irradiation. Survivors were analyzed 30 days after treatment. Astroglial and microglial responses were investigated based on the expression of glial markers assessed with immunohistochemistry, and quantitative changes in brain biomolecules were investigated by Raman microspectroscopy. In addition, blood plasma levels of pro-inflammatory (interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor α) and anti-inflammatory (interleukin 10) cytokines were assessed. We found that application of anisomycin either before or after irradiation significantly decreased the expression of the microglial marker Iba-1. We also found an increased intensity of Raman spectral bands related to nucleic acids, as well as an increased level of cytokines when anisomycin was applied after irradiation. This suggests that the radioprotective effects of anisomycin are by decreasing Iba-1 expression and stabilizing genetic material by increasing the level of nucleic acids. © 2021 The Author(s) 2021. abstract = {Neonicotinoid insecticides are used against the wide range of pests to protect plants. The influence of neonicotinoids on target and non-target insects is well understood. Hence, there are controversial opinions about the effect of neonicotinoids on the plants. We investigated pigments and photosynthetic primary reactions in two maize genotypes (the inbred line zppl 225 and hybrid zp 341) under thiamethoxam (TMX) treatment by root irrigation. It was found that the effect of TMX depended on pesticide application techniques and selection of maize genotype. TMX was added to the soil by root irrigation on the 4th and 8th days after planting, and photosynthetic characteristics monitored on the 10th and 12th days after planting. The primary photochemical reactions in PSII (Fv/Fm) of both maize genotypes were not affected under two variants of TMX treatment during all growing period. The hybrid zp341 was shown to be more susceptible to both TMX treatments, demonstrating a decrease in photosynthetic characteristics (JIP-test parameters) as well as changes in the content of pigments and in the conformation of the carotenoid molecule. Our findings suggest that the combination of fluorescence method and Raman spectroscopy is a perspective tool for monitoring plant state under pesticide application. © 2021 CSIRO.},

abstract = {Introduction: Hypericum perforatum L., Hypericaceae (St John's wort) is a highly familiar plant in the medicinal community which recently showed good antiviral activities including against some types of coronavirus. Objective: Establishing the kinetics of isothermal extraction of total hypericin (TH) from the pre-extracted flowers of H. perforatum flowers. Methods: The solvent extraction of TH from the remaining solid residue after the pre-extraction procedure was performed providing isothermal conditions at the temperature of 313 K, 323 K, and 328 K (±1 K) using ethanol as a solvent. The feasibility of mathematical modelling of the isothermal kinetics of TH extraction was explored applying some of the frequently used kinetic models of solvent extraction: first-order reaction model, film theory model, unsteady-state diffusion model, parabolic diffusion model, Elovich's equation. The kinetic complexity was examined using the differential isoconversional method. Results: The kinetics of isothermal solvent extraction of TH is a kinetic elementary process with the unique rate-determining step. It was found that the kinetics of isothermal extraction of TH can be best described employing the theoretical Jander three-dimensional (3D) diffusional model and its suitability for modelling the investigated extraction was confirmed with statistical parameters [adjusted linear correlation coefficient (R2adj) = 0.998–0.999 and the standard error (SE) = 0.005–0.006]. The values of the model kinetic parameters (rate constant (kM/min-1), activation energy (Ea = 21.0 ± 4.9 kJ/mol) and pre-exponential factor (lnA = 3.1 ± 2.2 min-1) were calculated. Conclusions: Based on the model mechanism of the kinetics of the investigated extraction a new mathematical model is suggested and the controlling step of the overall process was found. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.},

abstract = {Isothermal kinetics of the exchange of absorbed water in a silica hydrogel (SH) with ethanol was examined. The isothermal kinetic curves of absorbed water exchange with ethanol were measured at the temperatures: T = = 297, 306 and 316 K. The rate of the exchange was analysed as a function of time. The possibility of mathematical description of the kinetics of exchange by the Brouers and Sotolongo-Costa's (BS) fractal's kinetics model was examined. Parameter values (n, τ, β) of the model and their changes with temperature were calculated. By applying the method of Ozao, it was determined that the rate limiting step of the process of exchange was the rate of exchange of the absorbed water with ethanol. Values of the fractal dimension of the SH-ethanol interphase were calculated. The dependences of the effective time-dependent rate coefficient, activation energy and pre-exponential factor on time and degree of exchange were calculated and discussed. The proposed model of the mechanism of the exchange of absorbed water with ethanol was discussed. © 2021 Serbian Chemical Society. All rights reserved.},

abstract = {Here, we evaluate three different noble metal co-catalysts (Pd, Pt, and Au) that are present as single atoms (SAs) on the classic benchmark photocatalyst, TiO2. To trap the single atoms on the surface, we introduced controlled surface vacancies (Ti3+-Ov) on anatase TiO2 nanosheets by a thermal reduction treatment. After anchoring identical loadings of single atoms of Pd, Pt, and Au, we measure the photocatalytic H2 generation rate and compare it to the classic nanoparticle co-catalysts on the nanosheets. While nanoparticles yield the well-established the hydrogen evolution reaction activity sequence (Pt > Pd > Au), for the single atom form, Pd radically outperforms Pt and Au. Based on density functional theory (DFT), we ascribe this unusual photocatalytic co-catalyst sequence to the nature of the charge localization on the noble metal SAs embedded in the TiO2 surface. © 2021 The Authors},

abstract = {Three new thiosemicarbazones (TSCs) HL1-HL3 as triapine analogues bearing a redox-active phenolic moiety at the terminal nitrogen atom were prepared. Reactions of HL1-HL3 with CuCl2·2H2O in anoxic methanol afforded three copper(II) complexes, namely, Cu(HL1)Cl2 (1), [Cu(L2)Cl] (2′), and Cu(HL3)Cl2 (3), in good yields. Solution speciation studies revealed that the metal-free ligands are stable as HL1-HL3 at pH 7.4, while being air-sensitive in the basic pH range. In dimethyl sulfoxide they exist as a mixture of E and Z isomers. A mechanism of the E/Z isomerization with an inversion at the nitrogen atom of the Schiff base imine bond is proposed. The monocationic complexes [Cu(L1-3)]+ are the most abundant species in aqueous solutions at pH 7.4. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies of 1, 2′, and 3 confirmed their redox activity in both the cathodic and the anodic region of potentials. The one-electron reduction was identified as metal-centered by electron paramagnetic resonance spectroelectrochemistry. An electrochemical oxidation pointed out the ligand-centered oxidation, while chemical oxidations of HL1 and HL2 as well as 1 and 2′ afforded several two-electron and four-electron oxidation products, which were isolated and comprehensively characterized. Complexes 1 and 2′ showed an antiproliferative activity in Colo205 and Colo320 cancer cell lines with half-maximal inhibitory concentration values in the low micromolar concentration range, while 3 with the most closely related ligand to triapine displayed the best selectivity for cancer cells versus normal fibroblast cells (MRC-5). HL1 and 1 in the presence of 1,4-dithiothreitol are as potent inhibitors of mR2 ribonucleotide reductase as triapine. © 2021 The Authors. Published by American Chemical Society.},

abstract = {Introduction: In 1962, Renpenning et al. published an article with 20 male patients from three generations with mental retar-dation. Scientists suggested that the syndrome with mutation mapped to the locus Xp11.2-p11.4 should be called Renpenning syn-drome. The deletion/duplication of an AG dinucleotide on proximal Xp in the polyglutamine tract-binding protein 1 (PQBP1) gene causing frameshift in the fourth coding exon was identified as the most frequent mutation in this syndrome. Renpenning syndrome with asymmetric cerebellar hemispheres has not been reported previously. Case Presentation: In this case report, we presented an 11-year-old male with mild developmental delay and mild intellectual dis-ability, microcephaly, dysmorphic face, short stature, and seizures. The following morphological abnormalities were detected: a wide nasal bridge, midfacial hypoplasia, short philtrum, low-set ears, low hanging columella, high palate, and narrow face. Neurological examination showed upper and lower extremities hypotonia with joint hypermobility. The patient had his first seizure at the age of seven, and he experienced a total of 10 seizures by the age 11. A systolic murmur of intensity 2/6 was present, and echocardiog-raphy showed chordae tendineae abnormalities in the left ventricle. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed asymmetric cerebellar hemispheres (mild right cerebellar hemisphere hypoplasia). A frameshift mutation in the polar reach domain (PRD) of the PQBP1 gene (c.459-462 delAGAG) was detected by exome sequencing. Conclusions: We showed the first case of genetically confirmed Renpenning syndrome in Serbia. Our patient had classical clinical manifestations for Renpenning syndrome as a consequence of frameshift mutation in the PRD of the PQBP1 gene. To the best of our knowledge, according to the literature, this is the first patient with Renpenning syndrome with asymmetric cerebellar hemispheres (mild right cerebellar hemisphere hypoplasia). © 2021, Author(s).},

abstract = {Seventeen water-soluble substances (of sodium, ammonium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, formate, methanesulfonate, glyoxylate, chloride, nitrite, nitrate, glutarate, succinate, malate, malonate, sulfate and oxalate) in 94 samples of particle matter in the ambient air, collected over ten months, in a suburb of Belgrade (Serbia), were determined by ion chromatography. To apportion the sources of the air pollution, the log-transformed data were processed by applying multivariate techniques. Principal component and factor analysis identified three main factors controlling the data variability: stationary combustion processes with the highest loadings of oxalate, malonate and malate; landfill emission and secondary inorganic aerosol characterized by high levels of ammonium, nitrate and sulfate; a contribution of mineral dust composed of magnesium, calcium and chloride. The hierarchical cluster analysis pointed out a differentiation of the samples into five groups belonging to different variables inputs. For the classification of ambient air samples using nine selected ions, the recognition ability of linear discriminant analysis, k-nearest neighbors, and soft independent modeling of class analogy were 87.0, 94.6, and 97.8 %, respectively. Time-series analysis showed that the traffic emission is more pronounced in winter in contrast to the mineral dust influence, while the effect of waste combustion exhibits no trend. © 2021 Serbian Chemical Society. abstract = {Ferulic acid (FA) is used in skin formulations for protection against the damaging actions of the reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced by UVA radiation. Possible underlying protective mechanisms are not fully elucidated. By considering the kinetics of proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) and radical-radical coupling (RRC) mechanisms, it appears that direct scavenging could be operative, providing that a high local concentration of FA is present at the place of•OH generation. The resulting FA phenoxyl radical, after the scavenging of a second•OH and keto-enol tautomerization of the intermediate, produces 5-hydroxyferulic acid (5OHFA). Inhibition of the lipoxygenase (LOX) enzyme, one of the enzymes that catalyse free radical production, by FA and 5OHFA were analysed. Results of molecular docking calculations indicate favourable binding interactions of FA and 5OHFA with the LOX active site. The exergonicity of chelation reactions of the catalytic Fe2+ ion with FA and 5OHFA indicate the potency of these chelators to prevent the formation of•OH radicals via Fenton-like reactions. The inhibition of the prooxidant LOX enzyme could be more relevant mechanism of skin protection against UVA induced oxidative stress than iron chelation and assumed direct scavenging of ROS. © 2021 by the authors. abstract = {In this paper, we employed plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of aluminum in a water solution of sodium tungstate (Na2WO4·2H2O) with the addition of the pure and Ce-loaded zeolites clinoptilolite and 13 X for the preparation of oxide coatings. The obtained coatings were characterized with respect to their morphologies and chemical and phase compositions using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The prepared coatings contained γ-alumina, WO3, and metallic tungsten. The surface morphologies of the obtained coatings strongly depended on the PEO processing time; the roughness of all coatings increased with PEO time, while porosity decreased with PEO processing time as a result of microdischarge coalescence and growth. All coatings contained elements originating from the substrate and from the electrolytes. Coatings containing zeolites with Ce showed higher photoactivity than those with immobilized pure zeolites. The highest photocatalytic activity levels were observed for coatings containing immobilized Ce-exchanged clinoptilolite processed for 10 min. It was observed that both clinoptilolite and 13X zeolites improved the features of the PEO coatings in a similar manner, making natural and abundant clinoptilolite an excellent candidate for various applications. © 2021 by the authors. abstract = {Abstract: In this study, C-doped TiO2 nanoparticles (C-TiO2) were prepared and tested as a photosensitizer for visible-light-driven photodynamic therapy against cervical cancer cells (HeLa). X-ray diffraction and Transmission Electron Microscopy confirmed the anatase form of nanoparticles, spherical shape, and size distribution from 5 to 15 nm. Ultraviolet–visible light spectroscopy showed that C doping of TiO2 enhances the optical absorption in the visible light range caused by a bandgap narrowing. The photo-cytotoxic activity of C-TiO2 was investigated in vitro against HeLa cells. The lack of dark cytotoxicity indicates good biocompatibility of C-TiO2. In contrast, a combination with blue light significantly reduced the survival of HeLa cells: illumination only decreased cell viability by 30% (15 min of illumination, 120 µW power), and 60% when HeLa cells were preincubated with C-TiO2. We have also confirmed blue light-induced C-TiO2-catalyzed generation of reactive oxygen species in vitro and intracellularly. Oxidative stress triggered by C-TiO2/blue light was the leading cause of HeLa cell death. Fluorescent labeling of treated HeLa cells showed distinct morphological changes after the C-TiO2/blue light treatment. Unlike blue light illumination, which caused the appearance of large necrotic cells with deformed nuclei, cytoplasm swelling, and membrane blebbing, a combination of C-TiO2/blue light leads to controlled cell death, thus providing a better outcome of local anticancer therapy. abstract = {Nowadays, a larger number of aggressive and corrosive chemical reagents as well as toxic solvents are used to achieve structural modification and cleaning of the final products. These lead to the production of residual, waste chemicals, which are often reactive, cancerogenic, and toxic to the environment. This study shows a new approach to the modification of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) using gamma irradiation where the usage of reagents was avoided. We achieved the incorporation of S and N atoms in the GQD structure by selecting an aqueous solution of L-cysteine as an irradiation medium. GQDs were exposed to gamma-irradiation at doses of 25, 50 and 200 kGy. After irradiation, the optical, structural, and morphological properties, as well as the possibility of their use as an agent in bioimaging and photodynamic therapy, were studied. We measured an enhanced quantum yield of photoluminescence with the highest dose of 25 kGy (21.60%). Both S-and N-functional groups were detected in all gamma-irradiated GQDs: amino, amide, thiol, and thione. Spin trap electron paramagnetic resonance showed that GQDs irradiated with 25 kGy can generate singlet oxygen upon illumination. Bioimaging on HeLa cells showed the best visibility for cells treated with GQDs irradiated with 25 kGy, while cytotoxicity was not detected after treatment of HeLa cells with gamma-irradiated GQDs. © 2021 by the authors. abstract = {Nanocomposites of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) and conducting polymers, polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PANI), were prepared by simple oxidative polymerization of the corresponding monomer (pyrrole and aniline, respectively) by tetrachloroauric acid. Au nanospheres and nanorods were formed in the case of Au@PPy and Au@PANI, respectively. Detection of As(III) using Au@polymer was investigated where both nanocomposites showed similar activity for As electrooxidation in acidic media. The activity of Au@PPy was notably improved upon the addition of a small amount of conducting carbon, giving higher current densities compared to the commercial Au electrode. Further optimization of the operational conditions including electrolyte composition, deposition time and potential, was carried out to reach the limit of quantification as low as 2 ppb. Au@PPy nanocomposite proved to be suitable for sensing of As(III) in the presence of other ions, such as Cu(II). abstract = {This paper presents a new two-step method for the synthesis of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 semiconductors, which implies, the first, the mechanochemical synthesis of TiO2–CeO2 support, and the second is the doping of different NiO contents by chemical precipitation in an aqueous medium in an ambient atmosphere. Structural, optical, electrochemical and photocatalytic properties of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 semiconductors were examined. The influence of different NiO contents on the electrocatalytic activity of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 samples was investigated in the oxygen evolution reaction and the results showed that the samples with the lowest NiO content have the highest electroactivity. The photocatalytic activity was determined during the phenol decomposition process over the samples with different NiO:TiO2–CeO2 ratios and the best photocatalytic activity is observed for the sample with 4.1 mol% NiO. The sample with the lowest NiO content obtained by a relatively simple method is suitable for use both as an electrode material in the oxygen evolution reaction and as a photocatalyst in the phenol decomposition process. © 2021, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.},

abstract = {The extensive use of pesticides requires innovative approaches to remove these compounds from the environment. Carbon materials are traditionally used as adsorbents for removing pesticides, and the development of the new sorts of carbon materials allows more advanced approaches in environmental applications. Using density functional calculations, we have predicted chemical reaction between the S(O)=P moieties of the organophosphates with point defects in graphene - single vacancies, Stone-Wales defects and epoxy-groups. The reaction was confirmed using ultra high performance chromatography for two graphene oxide samples and dimethoate as a representative of organophosphates. The exact reaction mechanism is still elusive, but it is unambiguously confirmed that no selective oxidation of dimethoate to more toxic oxo-analog occurs. The presented results can help to develop novel systems for the irreversible conversion of organophosphates to non-toxic compounds, without using aggressive chemical agents or external physical factors like UV radiation. © 2021 Serbian Chemical Society. abstract = {Modifying commercial Li-ion batteries to become more environmentally friendly is of a growing concern.

Furthermore, it proved to be suitable for As(III) sensing in real samples. © 2021 Elsevier B.V.},

abstract = {This paper presents a new two-step method for the synthesis of NiO/TiO2–CeO2 semiconductors, which implies, the first, the mechanochemical synthesis of TiO2–CeO2 support, and the second is the doping of different NiO contents by chemical precipitation in an aqueous medium in an ambient atmosphere.
